"The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters": Goya’s Caprichos etchings (1799), Durer's Ship of Fools woodcuts (1494), David Deuchar’s etchings (1786) after Hans Holbein’s Dance of Death, John Martin’s Paradise Lost mezzotints (1823-25), and Georges Rouault’s Miserere mixed-media intaglios (1922-1928)
Rouault did not make any woodcuts or wood-engravings, but he designed a great many of them to be cut by Georges Aubert (who also cut many wood-engravings for Picasso). Rouault, eggedd on by Ambroise Vollard, imagined a number of grand artist's books, greand both in conception and in size. In this enterprise, Aubert was a willing collaborator whose skills as a wood-engraver were unmatched by anyone in the 1920s-1930s.
