Matisse and André Rouveyre had been friends many years earlier, and meeting in the "Zone Libre" (Cannes, Nice, Vence) during the Occupation, they renewed their friendship. Rouveyre asked Matisse for a portrait of him that could be reproduced in his fiction, Repli. Matisse agreed, but instead, during the years 1944-1945 he executed 12 original lithograhs and designed a number of linogravures and the maquette for the book itself. (for more information, see Matisse L'Art du Livre, Cahiers Henri Matisse 3 [Nice: Musée Matisse, 1986], 52-53).
