The Resurrection (Bartsch 613 iii/iii). Engraving after Dürer's Small Woodcut Passion, c. 1512. Very good impression on laid paper with thread margins; "28" in cartouche. The darkest tonality in the sequence is to be seen in the previous plate, The Entombment, where the sun of the world has set leaving everything in darkness; here the Sun (and the Son) have risen, and light floods the scene. The guard to the right of Jesus seems to be trying to protect his eyes against the light. Image size: 127x98mm. Price: Please call or email for current pricing information.
Jesus appears to his Mother (Bartsch 614 ii/iii). Engraving after Dürer's Small Woodcut Passion, c. 1512. Very rich impression on laid paper with thread margins; "28" lower right; cartouche empty. This scene does not occur in any of the Gospel accounts of the Resurrection. Jesus appears here once gain to be the light in the darkness of the room in which Mary sits praying. Image size: 131x98mm. Price: Please call or email for current pricing information.
Noli me tangere / Do not touch me (Bartsch 615 ii/iii). Engraving after Dürer's Small Woodcut Passion, c. 1512. Very rich impression on laid paper with thread margins; "30" lower right; cartouche empty. Jesus appears here once again to be the light in the darkness in which Mary Magdalene seeks not for the Risen Christ but for his body. See Luke 24: 8-16. Image size: 127x99mm. Price: Please call or email for current pricing information.
Supper at Emmaus (Bartsch 616 ii/iii). Engraving after Dürer's Small Woodcut Passion, c. 1512. Very good impression on laid paper with thread margins; "31" lower right; cartouche empty. Most of the light in the room appears to be coming from the risen Jesus (the side of the clothing of the disciple on our right is much darker than the side illuminated by the light from Jesus' halo). This is the first plate in which Jesus appears to be making direct eye-contact with the viewer. Image size: 131x98mm. Price: Please call or email for current pricing information.
Doubting Thomas (Bartsch 617 ii/iii). Engraving after Dürer's Small Woodcut Passion, c. 1512. Very good impression on laid paper with thread margins; "32" lower right; cartouche empty. The main light source in the room is again the risen Jesus, whose halo shines against the very dark background. Image size: 131x98mm. Price: Please call or email for current pricing information.
The Ascension (Bartsch 618 ii/iii). Engraving after Dürer's Small Woodcut Passion, c. 1512. Very good impression on laid paper with thread margins; "33" lower right; cartouche empty. One of Dürer's most daring compositions: Jesus has already risen enough that only his feet and a little bit of his robe are visible; if the risen Christ is to be visible now, it must be through the eyes of faith, as Jesus told Doubting Thomas in the previous plate in the series. Small ink stain on the rock below the cloud upon which Jesus is ascending into Heaven. Image size: 126x100mm. Price: Please call or email for current pricing information.
Pentecost (Bartsch 619 iii/iii). Engraving after Dürer's Small Woodcut Passion, c. 1512. Very good impression on laid paper with thread margins; "34" in cartouche. The Holy Spirit in the form of a dove hovers over the Virgin and the Apostles illuminating the darkness and flames dance over the heads of all. Small interrupted red line beginning at the top of the aureole of light surrounding the dove and continuing just into its right wing. For a drawing based upon Dürer's version of this print, click here. Image size: 127x100mm. Price: Please call or email for current pricing information.
The Last Judgment (Bartsch 620 i/iii). Engraving after Dürer's Small Woodcut Passion, c. 1512. Jesus comes on the clouds, heralded by angels blowing the last trumps and with the Virgin and John the Baptist kneeling in prayer on either side. Immediately below Jesus, the dead rise from their graves and are led to our left by angels toward the bright light of Heaven or forced to our right by devils who push them into the ultimate darkness of a giant hell-mouth in the form of a huge dragon-mouth. Coming from Jesus' mouth on our left is the lily of grace and on our right the sword of justice. A wonderful impression of this ultimate plate in the series in the first state of three. Image size: 127x100mm. Price: Please call or email for current pricing information.
